Love Future You

Questions, answered plainly.

What is Love Future You?

A letter from you, for your future self. Write up to 1,000 characters. A paid solo letter starts at US$5; a pair starts at US$9 for two. The currency, price and any tax are shown at checkout. Payment is one-off, with no subscription or account. Paid letters wait one year after sealing.

When does my letter open?

One calendar year after the server seals it with confirmed payment. A pair also needs both letters to be complete. The final date is fixed then; a date shown while drafting is provisional. Keep the final opening link. Email may arrive later than the opening instant, and your local clock can shift with daylight saving.

Can I open it early?

The service does not offer early opening: it withholds the stored encrypted letter until its opening date. A refund cancels a letter; it does not reveal it. This is an access rule, not a claim that a date is enforced by unbreakable cryptography.

How private is my letter?

Your letter is encrypted in your browser. Our letter database stores encrypted content, not the private key. However, the browser sends the key to our server for the key email and certain checks, including refund and Tapestry requests. Those checks can decrypt the letter temporarily in server memory. The email provider also processes the private link. This is not a promise that we could never access a letter. For a letter written for someone else there is one narrow, stated exception: see Letters for someone else.

What if I lose my private link or key email?

Keep your private link or key email somewhere safe. We do not retain a recovery copy of the key in the letter database. If you lose every copy, we cannot recreate it. Reminder and opening-day emails do not replace the key email.

What is the two-letter option?

Two letters — one shared moment. One purchaser pays for both. Each person writes their own letter to their future self. You can write together on one device, handing it over before one checkout, or write apart through a private invitation. In the remote mode, the second person has 5 days from pair creation to write. Both letters must be written and payment confirmed before either seals.

When does a pair's one-year wait begin?

Both letters seal only when payment is confirmed and both letters are complete. Their shared one-year wait starts at that sealing step, not when the first person writes or starts checkout. Both become available at the same stored opening instant; their emails may arrive at different times.

What if the other person never writes?

The remote invitation expires after five days from pair creation. Daily processing starts a full refund of any pair payment. Your first draft is not immediately deleted: it remains available for a separate solo purchase until cleanup, normally 60 days from its original creation. There is no automatic conversion or new charge. Keep your key.

Can we read each other's letters?

Not through the default pair experience: each person receives their own access link. In same-device mode, you can both choose an exchange to read each other's letters after opening. Either can cancel that exchange beforehand. Remote pairs have no exchange. Use a trusted shared device and keep private links safe.

What emails will we receive?

Each writer is sent a private key email when their draft is submitted; it may arrive before payment and is not proof of sealing. For a remote pair, the invitation email follows confirmed payment. One reminder is attempted after day three while it is paid and pending, and the purchaser is emailed if the paid, unfinished invitation expires. An abandoned unpaid checkout does not trigger those emails. Sealed paid letters get roughly three reminders over the year and an opening-day notification. If you pay first, we email you that link once your payment is confirmed, up to three short reminders in its first week while it is unsealed, one notice before an automatic refund, and a note when a refund happens. Your private key email is sent when you seal it.

Can I get a refund?

Yes: a full change-of-mind refund is available before your letter is delivered. The paid solo letter's private refund button closes at the opening instant; contact refunds@lovefutureyou.com for an eligible request afterward or for any pair refund. One pair payment covers two people. Ordinary refunds cancel the affected letters; the expired-invitation draft exception is explained above. Consumer-law remedies still apply after delivery if something went wrong.

Can I pay now and write later?

You can pay for one letter to yourself now and write it later. The paid letter waits, unsealed, and we email you a private link to write and seal it on any device. Its one-year wait starts when you seal it, never when you pay. You can refund a letter you paid for first yourself, at any time before you seal it, from its link. If it is still unsealed 90 days after payment, we refund the full amount automatically and close it. We first try to email you about it, and we do not refund sooner than 7 days after that email or before the end of the day it names, in your time zone. If that email cannot be sent, the refund still happens, 7 days later. If a payment needs checking by a person and cannot be confirmed within 3 days, we refund it in full. If the payment provider refuses a refund, we try again, and if it keeps refusing, a person completes the refund by hand. Refunds go back through our payment processor to the original payment method. Once sealed, it is an ordinary letter and the rest of this page applies.

What if the opening email does not arrive?

Check spam and use the private link you kept: it does not need a new email to become available. Opening emails are processed hourly, so inbox arrival is not exact. If your link fails or delivery goes wrong, contact hello@lovefutureyou.com. Keep the key email; an opening notification alone cannot replace it.

Can I pick a different date, or send a letter to someone else?

New letters are addressed to your own future self and wait one year from sealing; there is no custom-date control. A pair lets another person write their own letter, with an optional exchange only when writing together. New short-term letters are closed. Previously sealed letters keep their original opening date.

What happens to my letter after delivery?

Daily cleanup clears the encrypted letter, its stored delivery address and the address's lookup hash after 30 days from recorded delivery, not from when you first read it. Failed deliveries need follow-up. Payment, security and other operational records are separate; this does not erase every record or every backup. Save your letter after opening if you want to keep it.

Who can use it?

You must be at least 18 to purchase a letter. Each person in a pair writes their own letter and should use an address and device they control. Do not use the service for unlawful content.

Is the Human Tapestry public?

Joining is optional. It shows a coarse place and a mark for a sealed letter, not the letter, email address, name or private key. A same-device pair can add two marks through its shared choice, so agree together before choosing it. Contact privacy@lovefutureyou.com about removal; there is no self-service withdrawal control at present. Public keepsakes and pass-it-forward links also exclude your letter and private key.
